TALK & LISTEN

TALK & LISTEN

Talk & Listen groups are peer to peer talking groups led by volunteers we call Captains.

WHAT IS A TALK & LISTEN GROUP?

A Talk & Listen group is a peer to peer talking group run by volunteers we call Captains. We train Captains to facilitate groups in communities across the UK.

These groups are held in person and online. In person meetings are held wherever men are – gyms, pubs, local cafe’s… in safe and quiet spaces so men can talk and listen using the Talk Club sharing model which starts with ‘How are you? Out of 10?’. This simple question helps men to put a number on how they feel, (1 being rock bottom and 10 being on top of the world) then trying to explain why.

Depending on the number of men attending, sessions last a maximum of two hours. Groups meet at different times, days and frequencies depending on the Captain and availability of space in the community.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A TALK & LISTEN SESSION?

1.

HOW ARE YOU?
OUT OF 10?

Check in with a number then explain why.

2.

WHAT ARE THE POSITIVES IN YOUR LIFE?

What are you grateful for?

3.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR MENTAL FITNESS THIS WEEK?

How will you improve your sleep, diet and exercise?

4.

HOW ARE YOU NOW?
OUT OF 10?

Check out. What’s your number now you’ve shared?

WHO’S THE CAPTAIN?

Captains can be any man over 18 years old who wants to lead and facilitate a peer to peer talking group in their community.
A Talk Club Captain is responsible for facilitating Talk Club sessions in line with the Talk Club model. They welcome members, explain the group guidelines, and lead each of the Talk Club rounds, ensuring everyone has an equal opportunity to speak without interruption or judgement. Captains uphold the core values of confidentiality, respect and inclusion, creating a safe environment where people feel comfortable sharing openly. They manage the flow of the session, maintain appropriate boundaries, and signpost members to additional support where needed. Above all, a Captain’s role is to create a consistent, supportive space that helps people improve their mental fitness through regular, honest conversation.
If this is you. And you are inspired to join our community as a Captain then book onto our training.
Training takes place online every fortnight for around 90 minutes. The training is lead by our Head of Captains, Ben Fernihough, who has many years of experience training men through the Talk Club model that’s been specifically created by experienced fully qualified therapists. In the training you will learn how to provide a safe space that can help men to open up and measure their mental fitness as well as signpost those who need more support via Talk Club’s own services or external support.
Email Ben to find out the training dates/times and book your place.

DONATE TO CHANGE LIVES

Your donation will help us in our mission to create a mentally fit society and change lives.

Our team of staff and volunteers works tirelessly to build a community where men can thrive, get their numbers up, and keep them up.

Just like physical fitness, mental fitness needs regular attention and practice to make a lasting difference.

At Talk Club, you can improve your mental fitness by attending one of our Talk & Listen, Talk & Exercise, or Talk & Craft groups.

And if you feel your numbers are dropping, we’re here to help lift them back up through our therapy groups with fully qualified therapists.
